Clear height ≈ height of the upper car + lifting height + platform thickness + about 100 mm safety clearance. With a 2,100 mm lifting height and two 1,550 mm sedans, plan for roughly 3.6 m; tilting lifts and pit lifts can work under lower ceilings.
Most failed parking-lift projects fail on height, not on capacity. A lift that fits on paper can clash with a sprinkler pipe, a garage-door track or a sloping ceiling. This guide shows how to calculate the clear height you need and what to measure before you order.
The basic formula
For a non-pit two-level lift, the clear height you need is:
Clear height = upper car height + lifting height + platform thickness + safety clearance
Platform thickness is usually 100–200 mm depending on the model. A safety clearance of at least 100 mm protects the roof of the car and leaves space for the photo-eye or limit switch.
Worked example
| Upper car height | 1,550 mm |
|---|---|
| Lifting height (from spec sheet) | 2,100 mm |
| Platform thickness | 150 mm |
| Safety clearance | 100 mm |
| Required clear height | 3,900 mm (3,800 mm with a 50 mm thinner platform) |
The lower car only has to fit under the raised platform, so a 2,100 mm lifting height gives about 1,950 mm under a 150 mm deck. That is enough for most sedans and many SUVs.
When to choose a tilting lift
A tilting lift raises the platform at an angle. The front of the upper car rises fully while the rear stays lower, so the whole system fits under a lower ceiling. Tilting lifts are the usual answer for older residential basements and home garages under about 3.4 m. Check the ceiling over the full length of the platform, because a beam at the front of the bay matters more than one at the back.
Pit and scissor lifts
If you cannot gain height, go down. Pit lifts and hidden scissor lifts lower one car into a pit so both cars can be used independently. You need a waterproofed pit, a drainage point and structural approval, but you gain independent access and a clean floor when the lift is closed.
What to measure on site
- Clear height at the lowest point over the bay: beams, ducts, lights, sprinkler heads and door tracks.
- Clear width between walls or columns, including door openings.
- Bay depth from the entrance to the rear wall.
- Floor slab thickness and concrete grade where the columns will be anchored.
- Available power: single-phase 220 V or three-phase 380 V, and the distance to the distribution board.
Send these numbers with photos and we will confirm which two-level lift fits, or suggest a scissor or pit lift if height is too tight.
FAQ
What is the minimum ceiling height for a two-post parking lift?
For two sedans of about 1,550 mm with a 2,100 mm lifting height, plan for roughly 3.6–3.8 m of clear height to the lowest beam, duct or sprinkler head.
Do tilting parking lifts need less height?
Yes. Tilting lifts angle the platform, so the rear of the upper car sits lower. They are designed for low-ceiling garages, but always check the car height and the ceiling profile over the whole platform.
Can I fit an SUV on the top level?
Yes, if the clear height allows it. Add the extra height of the SUV to the calculation, or put the taller car on the lower level when the lift is a non-pit stacker.
