Two-Post vs Four-Post Parking Lift: Which One Fits Your Garage?

Compare two-post and four-post parking lifts on footprint, capacity, installation, anchoring and use cases, and see when a tilting or triple stacker is the better choice.

Two-Post vs Four-Post Parking Lift: Which One Fits Your Garage?
Short answer

A two-post parking lift saves width and keeps the floor open, so it suits narrow home garages and basements. A four-post lift is free-standing, carries heavier vehicles more evenly and is easier to install where anchoring is limited, so it suits workshops, dealers and outdoor carports.

Both designs lift one car so another can park underneath. The differences are in footprint, load, anchoring and how you use the space under the platform.

Why choose a two-post lift

Two-post parking lifts are compact and quick to install. They typically use a hydraulic cylinder with chains or wire ropes and a mechanical safety-lock ladder on each column. They need a solid, level slab for the anchor bolts.

Why choose a four-post lift

Four-post lifts carry the load on four columns, so they handle heavier vehicles and longer wheelbases. Because they stand on their own base plates, they are popular in rented premises and outdoor carports. Many models can also take a drip tray so oil from the upper car does not fall on the car below.

Two alternatives worth considering

  • Tilting lifts for ceilings that are too low for a flat platform.
  • Triple stackers when you need three cars per bay and have about 5.5 m or more of clear height.

FAQ

Does a four-post parking lift need to be bolted down?

Many four-post lifts are free-standing and can be moved, but anchoring is recommended for permanent installations and is required outdoors or in seismic zones.

Which lift is better for heavy SUVs?

Four-post lifts spread the load over four columns and are the usual choice above 2,500 kg. Our four-post range covers 2,000 to 5,000 kg.

Can I use a parking lift for servicing cars?

Parking lifts are designed for storage. For under-car work, use a two-post service lift with swing arms, which gives open access to wheels and the underbody.
